Adult Learning Opportunities

Girl Scouts strives to provide you with just enough information to successfully manage your group of girls, and then to let you know how and where you can get additional information on certain topics when you’re ready to find out more. You’ll find that volunteer learning is offered in a variety of ways, so as to best meet your unique learning styles: written resources; face-to-face learning; interactive online learning—and additional methods are being developed and tested all the time!
Currently, through Girl Scouts Heart of the South, you’ll find online learning modules that you can complete on your own schedule and at your own pace, as well as face-to-face training opportunities that allow for immediate feedback on the skills learned and knowledge gained.

Learning opportunities ensure that you have the support you need in Girl Scouting. The volunteer learning department at your council will provide you with the instruction and guidance necessary to fulfill your role successfully as a Girl Scout volunteer—learning that will not only help you work more effectively with Girl Scouts but also may introduce new skills and behaviors into your work life, relationships, and personal development.

Please register for any of the following using an Adult Development Course Registration Form (PDF format or Word Format), one per session/person, along with any session fees. Fax or e-mail registration to Raleigh Walker (raleigh.walker@girlscoutshs.org). Your registration is not complete until the fees are received.  Registration for courses closes 3 business days prior to the session.

GSUSA Online Volunteer Orientation
This online orientation will be the first close-up view of the Girl Scout organization for all new volunteers. It is designed to introduce new volunteers to Girl Scouting and the many rewarding opportunities that Girl Scouting offers girls and adults. To complete the orientation, volunteers need to go to http://training.girlscouts.org and select “Basic Orientation” (password is “discover”). Once complete, volunteers will be prompted to fill out the Learning Log. In order to receive credit for the orientation, volunteers must enter raleigh.walker@girlscoutshs.org as the volunteer manager. When prompted, select “Girl Scouts Heart of the South” from the drop down menu. Course is required for all Girl Scout volunteers.

Volunteer Essentials (previously known as Leader Orientation or Basic Leader Training)
Let your journey begin! This session is for new volunteers serving in any pathway. Come learn more about Girl Scouts as a movement and our rich tradition. Course is required and needs to be completed prior to meeting with girls.

Volunteer Essentials is now available as a home study option. Safety-Wise 101 provides an introduction to the GSUSA publication, shows how it is used and highlights some of the most commonly sought out activity checkpoints and guidelines. The training is now available as a Home Study course. Click here to download a PDF or Word version of the course. The completed course should be sent to Raleigh Walker at the Memphis Service Center. It can be faxed to 901-797-2183 or the Word version can be e-mailed to raleigh.walker@girlscoutshs.org. Volunteers will also be able to access it through their membership manager or volunteer services. Hard copies are available at your local council office. Course is required and needs to be completed prior to meeting with girls.

CPR

Wilderness First Aid
Wilderness First Aid Basics is an American Red Cross course designed to serve as an educational resource for those involved in activities that take them beyond the scope of traditional urban emergency services.  In these cases, emergency care is delayed until help can be notified and rescuers can reach the intended patient.  This course helps provide the knowledge and skills necessary to deal with these emergencies until more advanced care can be provided.

There are no prerequisite courses, but prior CPR training is highly recommended.  Participants that successfully complete 16- hour course (pre-course assignment and three sessions) qualify to serve as a Level 2 First-Aider.  Participants must attend all three sessions, demonstrate practical skills and successfully complete a written test.  Wilderness First Aid Basics certification is 3 years (A review test may be taken before certification expires).  The training manuals will be mailed after the course fee has been paid.
