Melissa – camp name Giggles - went to her first Girl Scout camp in the third grade. Her clothes were carefully packed in plastic bags – one clean set for each day. Thankfully it was a mini-session, her mother recalls, because she only used one clean set of clothes during her entire stay! But Giggles couldn’t wait to tell her family all the fun she had, and she couldn’t wait to go back the next year!
And so she did. Summer after summer she couldn’t wait to hit the trails in hiking boots and on horseback, to swim and later to life guard; she couldn’t wait to help campers with physical and intellectual challenges as a Counselor-in-Training. She made new friends and countless memories.
Today, far away from Kamp Kiwani and Camp Tik-a-Witha, Giggles is the Camp Director for another special camp for children, their siblings and their families living with autism. Because that’s the Girl Scout way – serving others with the caring, confidence, and creativity she learned at camp. And every summer she still can’t wait to introduce more special kids to the fun-filled outdoor adventures she treasures!
Unfortunately, not all girls can afford to attend summer camp. Our Girl Scout Council covers much of the operating costs, but fees to a girl’s family today average $300 a week. Your support of a Campership helps to ensure that girls like Giggles can begin to develop these real-world leadership abilities now and continue to serve our communities in the future.
$125 can send a girl to a mini-camp session
- $300 can provide one week of resident camp
- $550 covers the cost to provide a week of camp for one girl
Gifts in any amount help provide an outdoor leadership experience for our girls
We can’t wait for the canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing and star gazing to begin. Girls can’t wait for adventures, friendships, and memories. We need your help this summer because the future can’t wait for the next generation of leaders with the courage, confidence and character to make our world a better place. Our future starts at camp with the next generation of Giggles.
Thank you for your generous gift to all girls this summer,
Myra "Skeeter" Collins, Senior Director of Program and Properties
