Destination Duluth - Adventure at -22 Degrees
Did you know that the moisture on your eyelashes freezes and seals your eyes
shut overnight at -22 degrees? And that soap bubbles shatter when it’s that
cold? How would you like a bed made from a soft mound of snow on a frozen lake
with a hot water bottle tucked into your sleeping bag?
All in a day’s
fun for Charlotte Joure, an Ambassador Girl Scout in Evergreen Troop # 10068,
who went to Duluth, Minnesota last December for her Dogsledding destination
trip. Girl Scout destinations are special travel opportunities for girls to see
new places, meet new people, and learn about different cultures and
ideas.
Charlotte kept all her fingers and toes and only suffered two
small burns on the palms of her hands where she touched the sled barehanded.
Her favorite parts were the beautiful sled dogs and her solo night. Her worst
was pulling a “polk”, a sled filled with all your belongings (60 lbs) that is
dragged behind you up and down hills.
While on a destination, girls
enjoy learning many valuable new skills. Charlotte learned how to walk in
snowshoes, how to make an ice-hole for water, and that, in extreme cold, fuzzy
gloves stick to everything. She also discovered a new sport; skijoring,
attaching a sled dog to your waist by a line and taking off!
More
importantly, she had the opportunity to meet remarkable girls like herself, to
develop leadership skills and gain confidence. It is opportunities like this
that are a priceless part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience we are so
proud to be able to offer.
