We believe children with special needs should have the
opportunity to experience and explore their capabilities in the great outdoors.
Therefore, the Girl Scouts Heart of the South offers the Elizabeth Gwin Session
for Special Children to make these dreams come true . . . one camper at a
time.
For more than 35 years a well qualified and experienced
volunteer staff of adults and mature young people have provided challenging and
fun opportunities to each camper during this special session. Girls and Boys
ages 6 – 21 who have special needs are welcome to apply to this six day co-ed
residential camp program held at Camp Tik-A-Witha. Exciting and enriching
activities include games, swimming, canoeing, fishing, hiking, crafts, outdoor
cooking and skills, horseback riding, singing, all-camp final campfire and wish
boats. All-camp special events are held daily including a carnival, theme
parties, and a dance. All activities are adapted to meet individual camper’s
needs and are designed to help individuals grow, be creative and have
fun.
The cost to attend the Elizabeth Gwin Session for Special Children for six days is $175. Partial financial assistance is
available, thanks to the generosity of many service organizations, businesses,
and individuals.
Ways you can help support the Elizabeth Gwin Special Session:
Stephanie's Stationary
Stephanie Reed is a camper from
Elizabeth Gwin Special Session and loves to be known as an artist. Confined to
a wheelchair and with limited mobility, her paintings are a struggle. Through
time and great joy she has developed a language of painting that has given her
the distinction of being a “real artist” Her work flows with bright colors and
lively rhythms that show talent as great as any we know.
She has turned some of
her paintings into beautiful note cards and is making them available at $10 for a
package of 10 with all benefiting the Pat “Robin” Dows Endowment Fund. An endowment which helps send children to the Elizabeth Gwin Session for Special Needs Children.
Sarah Goes to Camp Book
Kayla “Spark” Collins grew up going
to camp and has volunteered for the Elizabeth Gwin Special Session for the past
seven summers. When it came time for her Girl Scout Gold award, she had a story
to tell. Kayla wrote, illustrated, and published “Sarah Goes to Camp”, a tale
of finding your place at camp. Her story was based on her experiences during
the Elizabeth Gwin Special Session.
Autographed copies are available for $10
with all proceeds from the book going to the Pat “Robin” Dows Endowment
Fund.
With your support we can make more stories like Andrew's...

Andrew was so excited about getting to come to Elizabeth Gwin Session for Special Needs Children this summer. He loved it so
much that he would not wear his school uniform for his first day of class.
He wanted to wear his camp shirt! Thank you, Andrew. We had a great time at camp with you too!
