Avoid the last minute panic of scrambling to find the mess kit, wondering if everything will fit in the suit case, running to the store to get bug spray and your daughter’s medication. Did you get everything on the "Packing for Camp" list before sending her off?!
Start packing and preparing for camp today. Early preparation helps ensure that your daughter will have a great time at camp. Here are a few suggestions to start getting her ready for the summer.
- If she hasn’t had much experience sleeping away from home or in a rustic setting, set up some practice times. You might camp together in the backyard or have her spend the weekend at a relative’s house.
- Introduce your daughter to camp by attending events there, like camp’s open house. Meet the staff and introduce your daughter. Familiar faces and places on the first day of camp is very comforting.
- Let your daughter know how excited you are that she is going to camp! She’ll pick up on your enthusiasm. Look over the camp materials together and talk about which activities she wants to try.
- Set summer goals to achieve at camp—for example make a new friend, learn something new, go off the diving board for the first time, etc. Let her know that camp is a fun, safe place that is full of new and exciting adventures.
- Talk about communications with your daughter during camp. You can email your daughter everyday. We encourage campers to write home. However, she will not have access to a telephone and cell phones are not permitted.
