TRAINING BY REQUEST!

Now available from GSHS,  training by request! If your service unit or group has a specific training need, submit an Learning Opportunity Request Form to your regional service center to let us know. A few things to keep in mind:  
+ There is a 10-person minimum for requests. If you are having trouble meeting this minimum, don’t forget to check with your membership manager or neighboring service units to see if there is a similar need.  
+ The ability to fulfill the request depends on the availability of a facilitator  

+ Requests must be received at least 6 weeks in advance of the training need

Advanced Camp/Backpack License - ABL

The ABL qualifies a person to take a group/troop on a hiking/backpacking trip to primitive areas where there are no bathroom facilities or provided water.  We will show you proper equipment use, waste disposal, water filtration, map and compass skills, emergency procedures, and meal planning. The training will consist of a prep meeting overnight and one night on the trail.  We will start at one of the Service Centers, then travel to the Sipsey Wilderness in Alabama or Land Between the Lakes in Tennessee. Equipment is included in the cost of the training. TCL is a pre-requisite for this course.

Cost:  $25 per person, includes meals, training materials and equipment fee


Archery Instructor

This training will prepare you to take girls to an archery range such as the one available at the Girl Scout Camps.  This eight-hour training is certified by the National Archery Association. An archery training packet will be mailed after the course fee has been paid. Participants should bring a sack lunch and beverages.  

Cost: $20, includes the cost of the training material and certification card.


Enrichment Courses

The council offers a number of enrichment opportunities for volunteers. Some of these include Crafts and SWAPs, Songs and Games, Ceremonies and Traditions and enrichments for the different grade levels.

Event Camp License (ECL)

This session is designed for those who want to take their troop/group to a camporee, Service Unit campout or council campout or an indoor camping facility, like one of our lodges. This training is designed for groups attending events where there is food service. You will not be trained on fire building or outdoor cooking. Training is approximately 4-6 hours.  Each person will need comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for camping and a sack lunch and beverage. 

Cost: $10, includes cost of materials


Facilitating Adult Learning

Facilitating Adult Learning is for volunteers interested in becoming council facilitators of basic volunteer, outdoor and/or enrichment training sessions. All experienced council facilitators are to complete this course as well. Note: Any volunteer interested in becoming a council facilitator must first apply. First Aid with CPR

American Red Cross CPR and First Aid courses are offered to volunteers through the council. To serve as a level 1 “first aider” for a troop, a volunteer must have both certifications. CPR certification is a prerequisite for First Aid certification. The cost for the First Aid/CPR training covers the manual, supplies and certification card.

Fundamentals of Canoeing

This is a course for adults and Teen Girl Scouts. The training will consist of one preplanning class and one day on the lake. Participants must be an intermediate swimmer and be able to remain afloat for at least 5 minutes. Bring a towel and a swimsuit to the preplanning session. 

Cost: $10 per person


Girl Scouting 101 - NEW!

Girl Scouting 101 is a 45- minute, self-paced online orientation to Girl Scouting. This fabulous resource replaces the existing Online Volunteer Orientation, the Leadership Essentials Online, and GSLE Overview.

Gold Award Training

Let us help your girls unravel the mystery in their quest for Gold.  We’ll help them cover the ins and outs, like paperwork, requirements, timing, and deadlines.  Training is MANDATORY for any girl who wishes to pursue earning the Gold Award.  

Cost: $5


GSUSA Online Volunteer Orientation

This online orientation will be the first close-up view of the Girl Scout organization for all new volunteers. It is designed to introduce new volunteers to Girl Scouting and the many rewarding opportunities that Girl Scouting offers girls and adults.

The training is available as a Home Study Course.  To complete the orientation online, volunteers need to go to http://training.girlscouts.org and select “Basic Orientation” (password is “discover”).

Cost: $0


Leadership Essentials

This course is for all volunteers working directly with girls and includes an overview of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, introduces the Journey resources and teaches how to effectively partner with girls to make their plans & goals a reality. Course is required for troop leaders and needs to be completed within the first two months of meeting with girls.

Troop Camp License (TCL)

This training has been designed for leaders that want to learn by experience before leading their troop through all phases of the planning, preparations and actual camping experience. This deluxe course will give you the knowledge and skills needed for either lodge, cabin, or tent camping and will include cooking most meals for the weekend over an open fire. This training includes all basic outdoor skills and is for all levels of leaders. Training is done over a weekend. There is no prerequisite for this course.  

Cost: $25, includes cost of food that you will cook and training materials.


Volunteer Essentials

This session is for new volunteers serving in any pathway. Come learn more about Girl Scouts as a movement and our rich tradition. Your adventure starts by learning about the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and program resources available to make your journey and that of the girls a memorable one. Information will also be shared with you concerning the healthy development of girls, how to keep girls safe, taking trips and hosting events, and helping girls manage group finances, including details on the Girl Scout Cookie Sale. Topics for volunteers working directly with troops such as how to form a troop committee, how to hold a parent first meeting and how to plan and hold troop meetings will be highlighted. Course is required and needs to be completed prior to meeting with girls.

The training is available as a Home Study Course.  You will need the Volunteer Essentials resource in order to complete the home study course.   Hard copies are available at your local council office. Wilderness First Aid Basics

Wilderness First Aid Basics is an American Red Cross course designed to serve as an educational resource for those involved in activities that take them beyond the scope of traditional urban emergency services.  In these cases, emergency care is delayed until help can be notified and rescuers can reach the intended patient.  This course helps provide the knowledge and skills necessary to deal with these emergencies until more advanced care can be provided.  Participants must be at least 15 years old.  CPR is a prerequisite for this course.  Participants that successfully complete the 16 hour course (pre-course assignment and three sessions) qualify to serve as a Level 2 First-Aider.  Participants must attend all three sessions, demonstrate practical skills and successfully complete a written test.  Wilderness First Aid Basics certification is 3 years. The training manuals will be mailed after the course fee has been paid.

Cost:  $40 for all three sessions. Cost includes the training manuals, certification card and supplies.
