scenic creation. A cement marker with

Girl Scouts Volunteer at the Mid-South Food Bank

By Alisha Henley, Troop 10933
Leader Girl ScoutTroop 10933 organized a trip to
the Mid-South Food Bank for Girl Scout Heart of the South troops in conjunction
with their Bronze Award project, Best Friends Feeding Friends (B.F.F.F.).
The girls decided to address the
problem of 1 in 4 students in Memphis comes to school hungry each day. That means
that 25% of each girls' class may possibly be going hungry at home.
In December
the girls organized with the help of the Cordova Service Unit a lock-in at
Advent Presbyterian Church. The cost of admission was at least 3 can goods per
girl. The girls collect over 350 can goods that they donated to students over
the Christmas Break. The girls also designed their own t-shirts to bring
awareness to this issue. During this academic year, Troop 10933 spoke to other
troops about childhood hunger in Memphis and collected can goods from other
troops. Their bronze award culminated with a trip to the Mid-South Food Bank,
they were joined by five other troops in the Heart of the South Council. Participating troops:

Planting Shade Trees at West Tennessee School for the Deaf in Jackson, TN
By Helen York, Troop Leader, Troop 40077
Girl Scout Troop 40099 and sister troop 40077 planted shades trees at the West Tennessee School for the Deaf after a Brownie's mom, a former teacher, shared in sign language about the school's mission and its students. This unique presentation inspired the girls to help make the campus more enjoyable for its students and staff. With the help from Dutch Garden Center, Girl Scouts and volunteers selected trees based upon sunlight and space. On the day of the planting Dutch Garden Center delivered the trees and dug the large holes needed to plant the trees. Girl Scouts then helped cover the roots and water the newly planted trees. The girls enjoyed this project so much they are already planning on another planting day for a local park.
Hernando Area Girl Scouts Honor Girl Scout Day
For the past five years Hernando Area Girl Scout Troops have delivered baby baskets to Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto maternity ward in honor of Girl Scout Week. Each baby basket is packed with diapers, baby wipes, baby shampoo, baby wash, baby oil, ointment, a onesie, a bib, a toy, a box of Girl Scout cookies, and a burp cloth with "A Future Girl Scout" embroidered on it.
On Monday, March 12, 2012, which was the 100th year Anniversary of Girl Scouts, sixteen Hernando Area Girl Scouts, ranging from Daisies to Senior scouts, delivered twelve baby baskets to the maternity ward at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto. The baskets are given to the baby girls born either on Girl Scout day or during Girl Scout Week. The Butterfly Garden at Avent Park
Dianna Wilson, Lafayette Girl Scout Service Unit Manager,
took a walk one day through Avent Park and was saddened to see that the
Butterfly Garden had become overgrown, littered and in need of repairs. She approached her Girl Scout troops with the
idea of taking on the garden as a long term service project. Local Girl Scouts have a long history with
the garden and readily stepped up to the challenge.
The Oxford Tree Board, Master Gardeners, Oxford Parks
Commission, Home Depot and both Boy and Girl Scout troops created the garden in
2003. John Arrchea and Andrea Walker of
the Oxford Tree Board developed the idea and designed the garden which was
funded by both the Tree Board and the City of Oxford.
Girl Scout troops have since planted flowers and done clean up over the
years.
Mr. Arrchea was thrilled to hear of the Girl Scouts’
commitment to maintain the area.
Girls and volunteers with the Lafayette Girl Scout Service
Unit will revitalize the garden and maintain it. A different troop is scheduled
to volunteer each month.

This project has again been embraced by the Oxford community. The local Home Depot donated stain, brushes,
fence repair material and flower bulbs. A garden center donated pansies.
The Oxford Park Commission arranged for the delivery
of mulch made from the fallen trees in the last tornado. A local
individual will donate flowering bushes in the spring.
“I love walking through the park and remembering all the girls who have
participated. We had many who were
"experienced" gardeners who talked about working in their own yards
and many who had never planted anything but showed up, got dirty and had fun.”
- Dianna Wilson, Girl Scout Service Unit Manager
