A Gift for Girls in Mississippi

We’re pleased to be able to support low-income scholarships for girls to participate in summer camp and other Girl Scout activities, as scouting provides access to leadership skills for girls from all walks of life.  These girls are future business and government leaders, and they’ll also shape the next generation of leaders. We’re proud to be able to support them.”
- Lawrence B Johnson Jr. Entergy Mississippi Regional Customer Service Manager

Girl Scouts makes a promise to every girl – to give her the opportunity to be the leader she wants to be, and that we need her to be.

With support from Entergy, we are able to keep this promise to offer the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to each and every girl - wherever she lives, whatever challenges face her, however great her journey.

At a time when one in five girls lives in poverty, and funding for education and after school programs is in decline, Girl Scouts says “yes” to every girl.  Girl Scouts are less likely to engage in risky behavior.  They are more likely to enter college and share their gifts with the communities around them.

While the issues facing girls today are complex, girls with the skills developed through Girl Scouting, such as leadership, confidence, values, and self-reliance, are much better poised to meet these demands.  For 100 years, this has been the work of Girl Scouts.

A grant from Entergy is sponsoring Helperships for girls in Mississippi who want to be Girl Scouts, but whose families have limited financial resources.  These Helperships are a gift to our future leaders.

It only takes one girl to change the world.  At Girl Scouts, we believe that every girl should have the opportunity to be that girl.  With the support of companies like Entergy, we can continue to meet the growing needs of girls in our community.

Healthy Living Healthy Choices

Baptist Memorial Health Care is proud to sponsor the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, to help girls build the skills they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Girls Scouts, like Baptist, has taken a holistic approach, teaching good habits at a young age to develop healthy women.”
 - Anita Vaughn, Administrator and CEO

Every girl deserves to live a healthy life -- emotionally and physically. This is one reason Girl Scouting takes a holistic approach to meeting the needs of girls today. Programs offered through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience help girls build the skills they need to keep their bodies healthy, their minds engaged, and their spirits alive.

Our Healthy Choices Healthy Living programs empower girls to take care of themselves and their communities. Girls participate in role playing, team and individual activities, skits, and songs that cover bullying, community change, healthy habits, leadership and more.

uniquely ME! is a program centered on girls discovering who they are, their beliefs and their aspirations. Girls learn how to build self-esteem and confidence in their abilities so they will have the courage to face life’s obstacles now and in the future.

FIT’S INN is a multimedia program that encourages girls in grades 2-5 to make smart choices about nutrition and fitness. Girls learn from their personal coaches and peers.

Young girls today are coming of age in a society of unparalleled complexity and uncertainty — the first global society our nation has seen. Girls face so many difficult issues that previous generations did not have to cope with: the breakdown of families, media glorification, gangs, stress, poverty, harassment via social media, violence in their backyards, and relational aggression at school. Increased drug and alcohol use, suicide, gangs, eating disorders, violence and low self-esteem are all prevalent in girls under the age of 18.

Girls need a place where they can just be girls without the pressures of school, society, and growing up. They need a place to dream anything is possible; to believe in themselves; to challenge themselves without worrying about being teased or judged; to develop healthy skills and values so they do not become just a statistic.

Girl Scouts is that place. With a generous $10,000 contribution from Baptist Memorial Health Care, Girl Scouts Heart of the South can ensure that these programs continue to produce the outcomes needed to secure the future of our girls.

Our volunteers were confident this investment in Girls Scouts Heart of the South would help thousands of girls in the council’s 59 counties throughout Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas. By improving technology, Girl Scout leaders and staff will be able to devote more time and energy to the Scouts and less to administration.

No Boundaries

As we approach our 100th Anniversary, the Girl Scout Leadership Experience remains relevant to girls today.  Technology is a way of life for our girls, volunteers and donors, and it is critical that we work with technology to communicate with and engage our girls and volunteers.

Technology empowers people
to reach their potential

  • to do what they want
  • to be creative
  • to be productive
  • to learn things they didn't
    think they could learn before.

Technology has changed drastically, and so have the ways girls and volunteers communicate and carry out their daily activities. There’s Facebook and Twitter…. phone apps and blogs… online courses and texting. We strive to remain relevant to girls and connect with volunteers, donors and  alumnae using the most up to date technology.

Girl Scouts Heart of the South has developed a comprehensive technology plan to meet current and future technology needs of our organization and reach more girls in the communities we serve.  The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis has selected Girl Scouts Heart of the South to receive a capacity building match grant of $15,000 in support of technology.  Girl Scouts was selected from sixty applicants based on the needs for improved technology and the impact of our work.

Updating and integrating technology will allow us to:

  • be more efficient in our work
  • improve communications
  • reduce costs and energy
  • enhance customer service
  • expand services
  • meet organizational goals
  • build our membership capacity
As Girl Scouts prepares for its 100th Anniversary and beyond, technology will play a key role in our capacity to reach and serve girls, volunteers, and the community. We welcome The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis as a partner in supporting girls who will become leaders with the courage, confidence and character – and technology skills – to make the world a better place.
